"Russia liner shipping ranking: Q1, 2009"

 10000 (tax incl). Order

According to SeaNews information, much fewer ships called at the Big Port of St. Petersburg in Q1 2009 while the Top 3 leadership has changed. Even the leaders among the box lines serving St. Petersburg, MSC and Maersk, are facing problems. Many of the rest have reported container traffic down by a quarter at the best with some lines having halved transportation volumes

At the start of the first quarter 2009 stevedoring operators of the Big Port of St. Petersburg were fighting tooth and nail to attract lines to their terminals. Competition has always been cutthroat at the port but, with throughput on decline, any single ship call at competitors’ terminals is now one ship call too many. According to SeaNews’ information, much fewer ships called at the Big Port of St. Petersburg in Q1 2009 while the Top 3 leadership has changed.

Even the leaders among the box lines serving St. Petersburg, MSC and Maersk, are facing problems. Many of the rest have reported container traffic down by a quarter at the best with some lines having halved transportation volumes.

“The closer to communism the more intense class struggle,” as a famous Russian “blast from past” goes. The truth of the matter is that as the crisis gets near the bottom terminals will be vying for lines’ “attention” at a breakneck rate. What benefits and sweeteners their clients might be entitled to as a result remains to be seen so far.

Growing in Q1 2009 were CMA-CGM, APL and Sea Connect/RCL. Detailed breakdown of container lines operations at the Big Port of St. Petersburg are available in the new Liner Shipping Ranking Q1 report by SeaNews.
