By the preliminary statistics available, the Russian ports handled in 2001 203.6 million tons of cargo, which is 21.3 million tons (+12%) more than in 2000.

On the 01 of August 2001, the Government of Russia has published Decree N 538 "On the activity of non state pilot companies." According to this Decree, the activity of self-administrative non-state pilot's companies at the main ports of Russia - Saint-Petersburg, Murmansk, Novorossiysk and Kaliningrad- is forbidden.
