Germany has approved a $375 mn investment to renovate existing locks of the Kiel Canal and to build a new one, reports DynaLiners.
The waterway connects the North Sea with the Baltic, and was last year used by 43 thousand ships carrying a total of a 100 mn tonnes of cargo of all kinds, including containers.
Work is to start in 2009 and should be completed by 2014.

Ferry traffic was disrupted at the port of Gothenburg, Sweden, on Thursday morning after a fishing boat caught and brought to shore a Second World War mine, according to Tradewinds.
An area with a radius of 1.1 kilometers was sealed off as authorities examined the object, believed to be a 150-kilogram British contact mine.
