On August 27, 2003, Mikhail Vanin, the Russian Customs State Committee chairman, on behalf of the Russian Federation, and Julian Schwezer, head of the World Bank’s office in Russia, on behalf of the World Bank of Reconstruction and Development, signed the agreement on giving Russia a $140 mn credit for the project “Customs information system modernization”.
The project involves customs control equipment modernization, equipping customs control posts with telecommunication and IT devices, developing local networks, etc.
The project is expecetd to speed up and simplify customs clearance procedures, improve customs control and help increase the customs dues collection.
