A Dubai-based owner has been forced to shall out $100,000 as a ransom to secure the release of its vessel which was hijacked off Somalia almost four weeks ago, reports TradeWinds. The 3,742-gt general cargo vessel "Mariam Queen" was released on the weekend having been held by Somali pirates since 3 May. A spokesperson for the vessel's owner, Al Hufoof Shipping, confirmed that it had paid "around $100,000" to have the vessel released.

Jan De Nul Group, world leader in dredging and reclamation works, has placed an order with Damen for a total of three workboats. Two of them are of the Damen Fast Crew Supplier 1605 type designed for the transportation of 20 persons on board at speeds of 30 knots. The third vessel is the first of the newly developed Damen Stan Tug 1606, the follower of the '1605' design of which approximately 100 units were built over the years. All three vessels will be delivered in the first quarter of 2007 ex-Damen yards in the Far East.

Dubai Ports World, the third-largest container port operator, said on Saturday it will invest $2.87 billion developing a harbour complex in south-east Britain to plug a capacity shortfall. DP World, which in February paid $6.8 billion for British ports operator P&O, will develop the port and a business park as part of the London Gateway Project at Thurrock, Essex, state-owned Dubai World, the owner of DP World, said in a statement. "The UK is suffering from a capacity shortage," DP World Chairman Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem told Reuters.

Gunmen have hijacked a vessel off the lawless coast of Somalia, the owner of the cargo on board said Friday, raising fears of a resurgence in piracy in Somali waters after a several-month lull, reports Agence France Presse. The United Arab Emirates-flagged MV Fishana and its crew of 12 were seized near Adale, 95 kilometers (60 miles) northeast of Mogadishu on Thursday, as it sailed to Dubai from the Somali port of El-Maan, he said.
