Hong Kong-listed bulker owner Pacific Basin Shipping has taken a 45% slice in a new state-owned general cargo terminal in China, reports TradeWinds quoting the announcement of the company. The joint venture with Nanjing Port Group is for the operation of Nanjing Longtan Tianyu Terminal, a project with a total investment of $74.66mn.

In January-May of the current year there was handled 3421 thousand tons of general cargo (+1.4%). Ferrous metal turnover totaled 1374 thousand tons (-25.4%), containers - 1257 thousand tons (+56.7%), cargo transported by ferry - 631 thousand tons (-0.8%), cars TIR and R-R - 104 thousand tons (+48.6%). Break bulk cargo handling amounted to 2337 thousand ton.

There was handled 114.0 thousand tons of import (+86.2%), 504.2 thousand tons of export (+0.8%) and 1272.8 thousand tons of cabotage (-0.7%). It should be pointed out that import container handling decreased by 10.3% - to 21.7 thousand tons.

A Dubai-based owner has been forced to shall out $100,000 as a ransom to secure the release of its vessel which was hijacked off Somalia almost four weeks ago, reports TradeWinds. The 3,742-gt general cargo vessel "Mariam Queen" was released on the weekend having been held by Somali pirates since 3 May. A spokesperson for the vessel's owner, Al Hufoof Shipping, confirmed that it had paid "around $100,000" to have the vessel released.
