12:14seaSeaNews Club materialFeeders Lose Money on Boxship Relets
Several intra-Asia feeder operators are giving containership owners and brokers cause for concern as freight rates tumble and under-utilised ships are relet at a loss, reports Lloyd's List. Top is Dongnama Shipping of Seoul that recently chartered out the 2,098 TEU "Jolly" for 12 months to Iran's IRISL at $19,300 a day. A year ago, Dongnama extended the hire of this ship at $23,700 a day, so the relet will leave it short by about $1.6 mn for the coming year. With brokers reporting late charter payments, the line's financial performance is being closely monitored by trading partners. Another unprofitable sublet came from Korea's Heung-A that has chartered out the John Fredriksen-owned "Sea Alpha" to Hyundai Merchant Marine for 7-10 months at $19,500 a day. The 1,740 TEU ship was fixed 16 months ago to Heung-A, in which the Norwegian tanker tycoon has a shareholding, for four years at nearly $29,000 a day.
