20 July 2007 the first session of the Russian-Latvian intergovernmental commission for economic, scientific and technical, humanitarian and cultural collaboration took place in Riga.
During the session minister of transport of Russia Igor Levitin and minister of finances of Latvia Oskars Spurdzinsh agreed on the modernization and improvement of boundary infrastructure and the use of systems of information exchange between the two countries' customs in accordance with the project of information exchange between the European Union and Russia.
Also the parties agreed to improve bilateral interaction in the development of the infrastructure of the near-boundary railway sidings and to apply advanced transport technologies, including container transportation.
As the RF transport ministry's press-service reports, the Latvian party suggested intensifying the use of the Latvian ports for transit cargo handling to/from Russia and other countries, including oil and products.

It is scheduled to put the multifunctional handling complex Yug-2 in the port of Uts-Luga into operation in August of the current year, announced general director of Company Ust-Luga, JSC Igor Rusu.
It is planned that the complex will begin with Ro-Ro cargo handling.
In September 2007 the company wants to set the first stage of the terminal to handle sulfur.
The liquid bulk cargo complex will be opened in the first quarter of 2009.
Besides, according to I.Rusu, Company Ust-Luga and SIBUR signed an agreement on the building of the terminal to handle liquefied hydrocarbon gas.

In January-May of the current year there was handled 3421 thousand tons of general cargo (+1.4%).
Ferrous metal turnover totaled 1374 thousand tons (-25.4%), containers - 1257 thousand tons (+56.7%), cargo transported by ferry - 631 thousand tons (-0.8%), cars TIR and Rî-Rî - 104 thousand tons (+48.6%).
Break bulk cargo handling amounted to 2337 thousand ton.

In January-May of the current year compared to the last year same period the turnover of the port of Arkhangelsk grew by 2.6% and totaled 1891.1 thousand tons, reports the press-service of the company.
There was handled 114.0 thousand tons of import (+86.2%), 504.2 thousand tons of export (+0.8%) and 1272.8 thousand tons of cabotage (-0.7%).
It should be pointed out that import container handling decreased by 10.3% - to 21.7 thousand tons.

There was handled 1183.2 thousand tons of transit cargo (+58.5%), 95.9 thousand tons of export (-42.6%), 0.9 thousand tons of import (-50%).
In January-May of the current year liquid bulk cargo turnover grew by 94.3% - up to 182.3 thousand tons.
